Since there seems to be a video trend, this is one of my favorite TED videos. I watch it again and again because of one reason…it’s applicable to almost everything in life. Simon Sinek has made a living going around to help companies figure out the “why” because frankly, “to make money’ doesn’t cut it.
What did I learn:
All successful companies have proved that they go from the why to the how to the what rather than the other way around. These are the Apples of the world…innovation, changing the way we do things. These are the GEs of the world…changing the world, be a socially conscious corporation.
But how else can you internalize this idea of why before the what? This is applicable to an individual’s career path, their drive in life, and even personal life. Is Steve Job’s goal to make money? Is it really enough to live by a “get rich or die trying” mentality? I do believe that the people who are truly successful in the world are those who have a very strong WHY to what they do and it is that WHY that leads them to be able to survive the day to day grind and take a turn when they smash their face on a wall.
Why it’s significant?
Everyone needs to find a why in their career, life, and state of being. Having a why in your career would place you on another level. To those of you who are currently looking for a job, figure out the why first. Why do you want to join Deloitte, why do you want to become a CEO one day? Is it to make an impact on the corporation or just so you can hit that 8 digit salary check? Once you get the why, the what will fall naturally into place…
